There are a couple of recent tools, that have greatly impacted “Our House” and they deal with ruling your emotions vs. letting your emotions rule you. When you have a house full of people, you are going to spend some portion of your day helping the little people navigate through their emotions and problem solving, and YOU also will need these tools in order to not be consumed by it all and to be JOYFUL!
Proverbs 31:26 says:
She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
Perhaps for some ladies that comes easily, but I know I have to work on it and I am better able to fulfill with verse when I have my emotions under control and generally feel HAPPY.
I hope this video encourages you with some ideas on how to foster that habit of happiness.
One thing I forgot to mention in the video that I got from the emotions course is to repeat to myself, “I am not my hand” when someone has a problem with something I have produced.
I think many wives can relate to this scenario:
My husband is vocal about the meal that I made, that it was not good at all. My natural reaction is to be defensive, to list of all the quality ingredients, the 5 star recipe rating that I followed exactly, how I feel taken for granted, that it’s somehow an attack on me.
Instead I can remind myself by looking at my hand and saying, I am not my hand. I am not that meal. If I make a bad video, I am not that video. If I write up a badly written blog post, I am not that blog post. People are free to criticize said blog post, video, and meal and I can feel fine that I am not those things. It’s not an attack on me personally and I don’t have to allow it to make me unhappy. Am I ok right now? Yes. Did I spend a lot of time preparing something not well received? Yes, that was in the past, but am I ok right now? Right! Right now I am ok and I can probably list of a bunch of things I am grateful for. So I am back to focusing on the good vs the bad.

I like to read a lot of self help type books, when it comes to being more productive, creative and stress free. I recently came across a really great one written by a plastic surgeon. The title may sound a bit crazy, but there is nothing crazy in it. It’s all very true and easily applicable in our daily lives.
Some of the tips covered in this video are as follows:
- Do your planning and worrying in the planning stages-
What I mean is, if you are going to worry about something do it when you are making a decision to do something. “Count the cost” early on and then follow through with it, without mentally trying to run away from it. Many times we feel anxious or jittery when we are dreading something we know we need to do. Either decide it’s not worth the mental distress, or realize it is something you need to do and then go with it. Let of of the expectations, worrying about the outcome and in general trying to mentally do something you physically cannot do, which is run away from it.
2. Form the habit of consciously responding to the present moment-
We have all heard this I’m sure. Often our creativity is blocked or we feel stressed out when we are living in the past or in the future. We should stick to a 24 pocket, no more than 24 hours prior or in the future. Sure, it’s great to make long term plans, however don’t dwell on them. Like the Bible says sufficient is the evil of today. By focusing on the current sights around you and smells, you will in turn feel more alive and wake up from auto pilot mode. If you start to feel overwhelmed, you can snap yourself out of it by asking yourself, “What can I do right now?” springing into action with break that cycle of mindless worrying about a time frame you cannot control.
3. Do one thing at a time-
This is difficult for a lot of mothers I am sure. We want to multi-task everything. However just like a sophisticated calculator can only do one problem at a time, and an hourglass only lets one grain of sand pass at a time, so should we deal with only one problem or task at a time. It does nothing for us to rush through one activity and have it not turn out as great b because we are rushing to the next task. In order to secure the best possible outcome for tomorrow, you simply need to give today everything you go, one task at a time.
4. Sleep on it-
Taking naps increasing productivity. Thomas Edison was known for his naps. Inventors would make claims that they would have the solution the following morning, because answers often came during the night. Burning the midnight oil is not the best way to be productive.
5. Learn to Relax while you work-
I recommend everybody find a relaxation technique that works for them. By making a new habit, you can replace the old habits. Being able to recall a feeling of relaxation can snap you out of a bad mood or feeling jittery. When you are feeling relaxed and happy, it goes without saying you will make better decisions throughout the day.
