My Favorite School Supplies

In this post I am sharing some of my favorite school supplies. As a Robinson Curriculum family, we keep it pretty minimal. There are a few things though that make all the difference for me.

These pens are so much fun! They are erasable gel pens. Now my kids can write letters to their pen pals in nice ink and be able to erase it if they make a mistake. The ink also erases in high heat (like a blow dryer) and then reappears when put in someplace really cold, like the freezer. This makes for some fun spy games in our house! This Abacus is a must for me for math with the little kids. When children are starting out, this is a great way to illustrate to them how 14 is different than 24 even though they contain the same numbers. Whenever we go over a number, I ask that they show me that number on this abacus.

You know me and how I love my non consumable materials! In order for the kids to comfortable use the sheet protected worksheets over and over, these fine tip Expos are a must. The regular ones are just to bulky and thick. These thin ones are low odor and fine tip so they work out great!

One of the very few things I require for math is graph paper! It makes is so much easier to read their math problems. I know they find it helpful themselves in order to line up problems correctly.

My kids sure love to draw and to have their own little space to make their own portfolios. These little sketch books are a must.  I first bought them on Amazon but then realized you can always pretty much find them in any dollar store.

Documenting Delight 11 & 12/365

We finally finished Tucket’s Gold and we are tearing into Tucket’s Home. This is going to be one of those series where we are all going to be a bit sad to say goodbye to all the characters once it’s over, I know it.

We also read a couple of chapters of Unbroken. Questions led to a rabbit trail of youtube videos on Hitler and WW2. You know what I realized? I knew practically nothing about WW2. My husband came home for lunch and even he was interested in these videos with us. These animations are easy enough for adults and children to follow. We talked about war, the consequences, how they begin and tied it in with the Bible.

I didn’t write out in my lesson plan that we would lean about WW2 today. It just happened thanks to a very captivating autobiography and the internet. I can’t say it enough, this is my favorite way to learn as a family.

I also started a new book I’ve been wanting to read, it was only 99 cents for the kindle version (you can read it on any device: lap top, phone, tablet, etc.,) so check it out!

Book Feels

I am not the emotional type at all, I hardly ever cry. These titles below though..ugh they got me. If you are looking for a book to grip you, these are a few I can recommend.

Pink and Say

A Single Shard

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

This last one in particular, I have never cried so much while reading aloud.  I glanced over and one girl was getting up to leave the room, another was silently crying on the couch, the little kids were bewildered! Afterwards my oldest came up to me still with tears in her eyes and we hugged and cried a little in the kitchen. Unfortunatly I asked her if it reminded her of her broken china dolls over the years (the main character is a china rabbit) and she said, it hadn’t but now I reminded her…oh boy..more tears…her remembering her dolls and me for reminding her and causing more sadness. After that I declared a popcorn and movie day to get it off our minds.

Is there a book you read aloud to your kids that was hard to get through, because you were in tears?
